Mini Project?

The use of mini-projects is to prepare the students for independent open-ended investigative practical work. The Engineering Students after completing two and half years of Engineering and just 3 semesters left for completing their graduation, are required to do a Project which would sum up the theory skills learnt during their previous semesters. The Mini project should be also be chosen in such a way, that it will act like intermediate step for doing a major project during last semester of B.E./B.Tech. It is advisable that every student should take up a separate project and submit the results in a neat documented format. The purpose of Mini project is also to ensure that the students learn to document the results and improve their presentation skills, which would be very useful for them during their final year or while they are working in the Industry.

We deal with Mini Project in Structural Engineering. We make the students model the building in STAAD or ETABS and will make them apply static loads and shall analyze and design the problem. They are also encouraged to design at least one slab, one beam, one column and one footing using practical methods using SP-16 & IS456.

Major Project?


Civil Engineers do learn design of various building elements such as slabs, beams, columns and footings using manual design methods as part of their 7 semester's curriculum. Many analysis methods are also dealt as part of the 7 semesters curriculum such as..


1. Flexibility coefficient method.
2. Slope displacement method.
3. Iterative methods like
a. Moment distribution method (By Hardy Cross in 1930's)
b. Kani's method (by Gasper Kani in 1940's)

4. Approximate methods like

  • Substitute frame method
  • Portal method
  • Cantilever method

 

All of the above methods are not only tedious but have many disadvantages over advantages. So, in this project, we have adopted Finite Element Analysis using STAAD.Pro, the world's leading structural analysis and design software is chosen for this purpose.

 

Scope of Project: The Student have to choose any one project of the listed 20 live projects. One has to model the same in STAAD.Pro as G+10 Structure. After modeling the entire structure, we are required to give supports, static loads & seismic loads. The structure is analyzed for considering the partial safety factors given for the Limit state of collapse given in IS456.


After doing the analysis of the 3D Structure for various load cases, the design is done for the maximum forces (Envelope) such as Max Axial Force (FX), Maximum Shear Forces (FY & FZ), Maximum Bending Moments (Mz & My) and Maximum Torsion (Mx).


Then we do various iterations manually to optimize the section sizes and reasonable steel quantities. Enough care will be taken to provide the ground floor columns % of steel between 2-3%. We then reduce the column sections 2-3 times and so all the columns will have 2-3 sections, keeping practical aspects in view. Beams are also designed having 3-4 sections for the whole floor. For few secondary beams, the end moments are released, to see that they transfer only point loads on to the main beam as reaction.


Procedures: The Procedure chosen for Seismic analysis is Seismic coefficient method, where the program calculates the Design Horizontal base shear as per 7.5.3 IS 1893 and then the software distributes the same to all the nodes in all the four directions. x+ve, x-ve, z+ve, z-ve.


Documentation: We shall document the analysis and design results in a proper format as required for the project. Keeping in view of limitations of the number of pages from 100-200, we shall contain the analysis and design results accordingly.
